“Stripper” by Andrew Jenner
Photograph, 12 x 16" (16 x 20" including frame), (edition 4/75) (2023).
Male striptease has historically been depicted in popular culture as performance for the pleasure of heterosexual female groups such as hen parties. This piece challenges the mainstream heterosexual dominance of striptease by presenting the pleasure of a queer Ken doll dressed in Barbie pink.
Bio: Andrew creates artworks using unwanted and discarded dolls, many of which he finds in charity shops. He either dismantles them and combines their parts to make composite beings, or presents them in ways that contradict their intended purpose.
Andrew began working with dolls in 2022 when he became a volunteer at his local charity shop. Presented with a myriad of donated dolls he started to make compositions simply for fun and since 2023 has been exhibiting his work in group exhibitions in the UK. Andrew particularly enjoys creating works from items he salvages from the bin.
